Fire Safety & Evacuation β Legal Requirements
Every employer is legally required to prepare for fires and emergencies. Fire safety and evacuation are integral parts of the workplace safety policy and are intended to protect human lives and minimize damage.
These obligations are set forth in the Codex on Occupational Safety and Health, specifically Book III β Workplaces and Book V β First Aid, Firefighting, and Evacuation.
At Heli Safety Academy, we translate these legal requirements into practical and effective training programs tailored to the risks specific to your organization.
What does the law say about firefighting and evacuation?
According to the Codex, the employer must:
- analyze fire risks and implement appropriate preventive measures
- ensure that suitable firefighting equipment is available
- develop an evacuation plan
- designate a sufficient number of trained personnel
- inform and train employees on emergency procedures
π In the event of an incident, fire and evacuation must be addressed immediately and effectively.
Risk analysis as the basis for emergency planning
The organization of firefighting and evacuation depends on the risk analysis. This analysis takes into account, among other things:
- nature of the activities
- fire hazards present
- materials and equipment used
- number of people present
- complexity of the building
Based on this, the employer determines:
- the number of emergency response and evacuation coordinators
- the type of firefighting equipment
- the content of the training
Appointment and training of responsible persons
The Codex requires employers to designate individuals who:
- extinguish a small fire
- manage an evacuation effectively
- respond appropriately in emergency situations
These individuals must:
- complete specialized training
- regularly update their knowledge
- be familiar with the specific risks of the workplace
Without training, an employee cannot act as a designated person in the event of a fire or evacuation.
Which educational programs are legally recognized?
Heli Safety Academy offers training courses that meet legal requirements:
- Firefighting β Basic Training
- Evacuation Coordinator
- Firefighting and Evacuation β Combined Training
- Firefighting Refresher Course
The training courses are practical in nature and incorporate realistic emergency scenarios.
Upon completion, participants receive a certificate serving as proof of completion.
Inspection, Incidents, and Liability
During an inspection by the Workplace Welfare Inspectorate or following an incident, the following is assessed:
- a risk assessment is in place
- fire and evacuation procedures have been established
- those in charge have been properly trained
If proper organization is lacking, this can lead to:
- violations or penalties
- increased employer liability
- serious consequences in the event of a fire or evacuation
β A well-organized fire and evacuation plan saves lives and protects your organization legally.
