First Aid in the Workplace – Legal Requirements

What does the law say about first aid in the workplace?
The requirements regarding first aid are set forth in Codex Book I – General Principles of Prevention and Book V – First Aid, Firefighting, and Evacuation.
According to the Codex, the employer must:

- appoint a sufficient number of trained first aid responders
- provide appropriate first aid supplies
- take into account the specific risks associated with the company

- existing risks (machinery, working at heights, chemicals, etc.)

Based on this, the employer determines:
- the number of first aid responders
- the required level of training
- the content of the training
Training of First Aid Providers
The Codex states that first aid providers:
- receive adequate and appropriate training
- regularly update their knowledge and skills
- be prepared for the specific risks of the workplace
First aid training is required for:
- designation as a care provider
- changes in risk factors
- introduction of new activities
Without training, an employee cannot act as a first-aid responder.
Which first aid courses are legally required?
