First Aid in the Workplace – Legal Requirements

Every employer is legally required to provide first aid in the event of an accident. This obligation is set forth in the Code on Well-being at Work and applies to all companies, regardless of sector or size.

First aid in the workplace is not an optional measure, but a structural component of the workplace safety policy. At Heli Safety Academy, we translate these legal obligations into practical first aid training courses, tailored to the risks specific to your organization.

What does the law say about first aid in the workplace?

The requirements regarding first aid are set forth in Codex Book I – General Principles of Prevention and Book V – First Aid, Firefighting, and Evacuation.

According to the Codex, the employer must:

  • establish a first aid program
  • appoint a sufficient number of trained first aid responders
  • provide appropriate first aid supplies
  • take into account the specific risks associated with the company

πŸ‘‰ First aid must always be immediately available in the event of an incident.

The first aid organization determines the risk analysis

The specific details of first aid in the workplace depend on the risk assessment. This assessment takes into account, among other things:

  • nature of the activities
  • existing risks (machinery, working at heights, chemicals, etc.)
  • number of employees
  • distribution of workstations

Based on this, the employer determines:

  • the number of first aid responders
  • the required level of training
  • the content of the training

Training of First Aid Providers

The Codex states that first aid providers:

  • receive adequate and appropriate training
  • regularly update their knowledge and skills
  • be prepared for the specific risks of the workplace

First aid training is required for:

  • designation as a care provider
  • changes in risk factors
  • introduction of new activities

Without training, an employee cannot act as a first-aid responder.

Which first aid courses are legally required?

Heli Safety Academy offers first aid training courses that meet legal requirements:

The training courses are practical and simulate realistic emergency situations.

Upon completion, participants receive a certificate confirming that they have been properly trained.

First Aid, Inspection, and Liability

During an inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate or following a workplace accident, the following is assessed:

  • a first aid program is in place
  • a sufficient number of first aid responders have been designated
  • these first aid responders have demonstrable trainingIf a proper first aid program is lacking, this can lead to:
  • violations or penalties
  • increased liability for the employer
  • serious consequences in the event of major accidents

βœ… A well-organized first aid program saves lives and protects your organization legally.
